"Da Nang, July 15, 2007 – The US Navy ship Peleliu arrived in Da Nang today with a multinational contingent of over 300 medical personnel and engineers to undertake humanitarian assistance in a planned, coordinated effort with the Government of Vietnam, partner nations and NGO relief organizations in the region. US Consul General to Ho Chi Minh City Kenneth J. Fairfax and Vietnamese officials welcomed the ship's arrival with a ceremony held at Da Nang's Tien Sa Port.
"Pacific Partnership participants will visit select locations in Da Nang. This mission underscores the commitment of the United States and Vietnam to work together to assist the people of Vietnam with this humanitarian outreach.
"The Peleliu Pacific Partnership team is a unique team formed from organizations with very different skills and capabilities, but unified in purpose to conduct a very important mission," said Adm. Robert Willard, Commander, US Pacific Fleet. "They carry with them a spirit of caring, commitment and compassion on this deployment for our Pacific neighbors."
"The deployment is expected to last four months, approximately 10 days of which will be spent in Vietnam. The effort is being carried out in conjunction with non-governmental organizations and in close coordination and partnership with local medical care professionals. Participants in this endeavor include volunteers from Project Hope, the Aloha Medical Mission of Hawaii, and the University of California at San Diego Pre-dental Society who join a contingent of medical specialists from the U.S. military and Australian, Canadian, Indian, Japanese, Malaysian, Republic of Korea, and Singaporean militaries.
"Medical personnel from Vietnam will work in partnership with their American and international counterparts for the Vietnamese portion of the deployment, providing focused medical care.
"The San Diego-based ship can support a variety of medical, dental, educational and preventive medicine services.
